TOP ACCOLADE FOR ISLE OF WIGHT PARK

Historic Ventnor Park on the Isle of Wight has been awarded the Park of the Year Award at the South and South East England in Bloom Awards.

It is the first time one of the Isle of Wight Council’s parks has been named park of the year at the prestigious awards, which this year were staged in Brighton.

Ventnor Park is one of four Isle of Wight Council parks recognised at the awards.

In the large park category, Appley Park, Ryde was awarded a silver gilt medal certificate, and Puckpool Park, Ryde was awarded a silver medal certificate. In the small park category, the Cascades, Ventnor was awarded a silver medal certificate.

As well as being park of the year, Ventnor Park also received a gold medal certificate.

The council’s parks manager, Nigel Leppard, together with the Island manager for the council’s grounds maintenance contractor John O’Conner Ltd, Stan Hayden, received the awards on behalf of the council. The park is maintained by John O’Conner Ltd via its partnership contract with the council.

The awards at the event were presented by South and South East England in Bloom chairman, Peter Holman, Jim Buttress from the BBC’s The Big Allotment Challenge, and Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins.

This year was one step better for Ventnor Park, which last year was awarded a gold medal for the first time at the awards.

The judges this year described Ventnor Park’s summer bedding borders and raised planters as “superb”. They also noted that “horticultural maintenance was of a high standard”, and described the park as “the quintessential Victorian park and the jewel in the crown of the Island’s parks”.

Executive member with responsibility for the public realm, Councillor Luisa Hillard, said: “This is a magnificent accolade for Ventnor Park and the council’s parks in general.

“It is the first time one of our parks has been recognised in this way and is deserved acknowledgment for the excellent efforts of all those who contribute to the upkeep of the park, and who take such pride in their work.”
Local member, Councillor Steve Stubbings, said: “We are so proud that Ventnor Park has achieved this top award for the south and south east. This is a real feather in the cap for Ventnor and the Island, and for the park to be described as the jewel in the crown of the Island’s parks is especially pleasing.

“I would like to join in the thanks and congratulations to all those who contribute to making it such a pleasurable place for us all to enjoy.”

Ventnor Park dates from the 19th century and covers an area of about seven acres. It features landscaped grounds over a range of different levels, with mature trees, shrubs, herbaceous and bedding borders, a bandstand, a stream with gentle falls and water fowl, a putting green (under concession), and an adult outdoor exercise equipment area.

COMPTON BAY, ISLE OF WIGHT, NAMED AS TOP UK BEACH

Compton Bay on the Isle of Wight is one of the best beaches in the UK according to the travel experts at Rough Guides.

The leading publisher of travel guides and travel content, the Rough Guides editorial team have chosen Compton as the “much-loved haunt of the Isle of Wight’s surf (kite and board) dudes and the place “where the Tennyson Trail laces its way along the coastline”.

Also known as a great place for fossil hunting and paragliding, Compton offers a two-mile stretch of contrasting golden and dark sands, with rolling seas, tumbling multi-coloured sandstone cliffs, and the white chalk cliffs at Freshwater in the distance.

It is one 15 of UK’s beaches listed in “The UK’s Best Beaches” category, which includes Porthcurno in Cornwall, Bamburgh Beach in Northumberland, Rhossili Beach in Wales and Blackpool Pleasure Beach in Lancashire.

David Thornton, CEO, Visit Isle of Wight welcomed the news and said: “Island beaches are a big draw for visitors and we are therefore thrilled to be listed by this highly respected publisher of travel guides.

“Whether you’re a thrill seeker looking for excitement or a parent planning a short break, Compton, like so many of the Island’s beaches, provides plenty of inspiration.”

There are currently 17 award-winning beaches on the Isle of Wight, including the four Blue Flag beaches at Sandown, Ventnor, Yaverland and Colwell.

Councillor Shirley Smart, Executive member for economy and tourism at the Isle of Wight Council, said: “It is fantastic that an Island beach has been recognised as one of the UK’s best beaches by such an internationally renowned travel guide. We have so many wonderful beaches to choose from, visitors are spoilt for choice.”

Compton was recommended by the Marine Conservation Society for the quality of its waters in 2012 and has now been named as one of the UK’s top beaches by travel experts Rough Guides.   Read more:   http://www.roughguides.com/gallery/the-best-british-beaches/#/6

VISIT ISLE OF WIGHT RECEIVES AWARD FOR ‘GARDEN ISLE’ AT BBC EXHIBITION

Visit Isle of Wight, along with its industry partners, created an award-winning display showcasing examples of the stunning flora from the ‘Garden Isle’ at the BBC Good Food & Gardeners World Exhibition from 12 – 15 June.

The BBC Good Food & Gardeners World Exhibition, which has been running for over 22 years, attracts an average of 100,000 plus visitors over four days. This year for the first time, trade-stands were assessed on their level of presentation and stands displaying an exceptional level of creativity were presented with an award. Visit Isle of Wight’s ‘Gardens of the Isle of Wight’ stand was awarded the prestigious Four Star trade-stand award by the Royal Horticultural Society.

The stand featured an eye-catching array of plants from Osborne House, the garden of which was designed by a young Prince Albert, as well as examples of the rare plants which grow at Ventnor Botanic Gardens thanks to the Undercliff’s warm microclimate. Placed between the two was a taste of the flora growing at the Garlic Farm, the UK’s largest specialist garlic grower.

Chris Kidd, curator of Ventnor Botanic Gardens, arranged the attractive garden area, which was set beside stands filled with Isle of Wight literature and a picnic hamper filled with Garlic Farm produce.

Liz Walker, VIOW Exhibitions Promoter, who attended the show, said: “Winning the award was just the icing on the cake. The BBC Gardeners World exhibition is a perfect platform from which to promote the Island and having this beautiful garden backdrop really gave us something with which to engage visitors to our stand. Significantly well over 4000 pieces of Isle of Wight print were distributed during the show proving that the Isle of Wight continues to be of great interest as a destination.”

Visit Isle of Wight will be representing the Island at future shows, including The 50+ Show at Kensington Olympia from 10 – 12 July and The New Forest Show from 29 – 31 July. Any tourism-related business interested in becoming part of the 2015 exhibitions programme should contact Liz Walker on 01983 201048.

NETTLECOMBE FARM GO THROUGH TO THE 2014 VISIT ENGLAND AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE

Nettlecombe Farm on the Isle of Wight has secured a place in the finals of the prestigious VisitEngland (VE) Awards for Excellence 2014, announced by VE on 1st April 2014.

After winning Gold earlier this year at the regional Tourism South East Beautiful South Awards, Nettlecombe’s Corner Cottage has been shortlisted by VE in the Self Catering Holiday Provider of the Year category at national level.

The Awards celebrate the very best England has to offer and the winners of this prestigious accolade will be announced at a glamorous, black tie Winners Award Ceremony at Cheltenham Race Course on Monday 12 May where they find out which award they have won: either Gold, Silver, Bronze or a Highly Commended Award.

Nettlecombe is a working farm situated half a mile from the quaint village of Whitwell, and offers luxurious self-catering accommodation, coarse fishing, yoga retreats and function barn hire. The farm has been in the Morris family for over 100 years, and serves as the perfect holiday base to explore the Island.

An important objective of the VisitEngland Awards scheme is to maximise the publicity and marketing benefits of being a winner.  As a winner, Nettlecombe will be entitled to display an awards logo on their literature and website.

Jose Morris of Nettlecombe commented: “We are absolutely thrilled to find out that we are in the finals of the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence; here at Nettlecombe we live by our motto of “continuous improvement”, which is obviously paying off.

“Seeing this award on our website means that potential visitors will immediately be aware of the nationally recognised high standards we maintain.   It is also a well-deserved pat on the back for our excellent team for all their hard work and efforts.”

Finalists for the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence are rigorously assessed by independent assessors and judged by a board of tourism industry experts. Carefully chosen by a judging panel, the finalists represent the finest in the industry and include a wealth of attractions, accommodation providers, tourism experiences, Tourist Information Centres and businesses that have shown complete dedication to developing the excellent standards of English tourism. Each finalist is guaranteed to receive a Gold, Silver, Bronze or Highly Commended in their category.

Peter Colling, Managing Director, Tourism South East, said ‘We are delighted that 8 of our Beautiful South Awards winners have made it through as finalists in the Visit England’s national Tourism Excellence Awards. It really shows that the South East has some of the very best tourism businesses in the country.

“It takes a fantastic amount of hard work and dedication to achieve the top five in their category in England. We are now looking forward to celebrating gold with our finalists at the Award ceremony on the 12th May.’

David Thornton, CEO, Visit Isle of Wight, said: “To be nominated in VisitEngland’s Awards for Excellence is a considerable achievement as the quality of applications is always extremely high and only the very best make it through to become a finalist.

“Nettlecombe provide an excellent visitor experience which is underpinned by exceptional customer service, and I offer my warm congratulations and wish them every success at the forthcoming Awards Ceremony next month.”
