Quay Arts Summer School 2013

Quay Arts’ Summer School once again offers a fantastic range of activities for people to choose from. The Summer School, now in its 11th year, is composed of 10 diverse courses, all led by established local artists and crafts people.
For those interested in learning new skills in jewellery making, there are two new courses. Silver Casting Weekend with Nina Bulley, where participants will use basic sand-casting techniques to create their own 3D objects and Precious Metal Clay & Porcelain Beads with Melanie Swan which explores two methods of making silver beads from precious metal clay, using bisque porcelain and cork clay.
Nikola Orpen returns to offer a new textile course: Colour and Dyeing – The Natural Way exploring a wealth of dyeing methods including indigo dyeing, rust dyeing and eco-printing.
Artist Bridget Macdonald, whose exhibition ‘The Poetry of Earth’ is showing in the West Gallery from 13 July to 31 August, is offering an in-depth practical study of working with the versatile and expressive medium of charcoal in Charcoal Drawing. Also, for those interested in fine art, Quay Arts is pleased to offer its ever-popular Life Drawing Summer School, this year led by Nick Martin.
Tim Johnson is running another of his inspirational basketry courses, Finding Fibres, this time working with a range of exotic natural materials such as banana leaf sheaths, esparto grass and New Zealand flax.
New this year, Quay Arts will be offering a weekend printmaking course, Printfold, where participants will explore the art of bookmaking with Ian Whitmore. Also, following sell-out courses during the last two terms, gifted multi-instrumentalist, JC Grimshaw is offering a Ukulele Summer School running over three mornings, for those who wish to get started or improve their technique.
Children are catered for too, Helen Reading with RedTIE Theatre is leading a week long Drama Summer School for children aged 8 – 12 years.
