Newport Jazz Weekend (18-20 July 2014) – First Acts Announced

The organisers of Newport Jazz Weekend have announced the first acts to appear in July 2014. The Jazz Weekend has gained a further major sponsor with support now from Red Funnel, alongside Wightlink and the Isle of Wight County Press. The 2013 event gained coverage and praise from all around the UK, and the organisers are now looking to top their previous success. The 2014 event takes place from 18-20 July and the first three acts have been confirmed.

On Saturday 19 July, there will be an appearance from the award-winning New Orleans gospel/blues outfit Tipitina who have made a couple of very popular appearances on the Island in recent years.         Earlier on the same day, the Bateman Brothers’ “Tribute to Louis Armstrong” will perform. The seven-piece outfit are highly in demand at Festivals across the UK and regularly sell out venues such as Ronnie Scott’s in London.

Sunday 20 July will see the Nigel Price Organ Trio appear at the Apollo Theatre. Nigel appeared last year with Georgia Mancio and is one of the leading jazz guitarists in the UK. His trio includes drummer Matt Home and Pete Whittaker on Hammond organ.

The remainder of the line-up will be announced in December and January with tickets on sale from February onwards. Regular updates will appear on the website

Event Director Jim Thorn said “our aim is to keep a similar formula to previous years, with a varied line-up touching on all styles of jazz. There will be a couple of experiments and a slightly expanded programme because we expect even greater support and interest from both the Island and the mainland”.

Visit Isle of Wight (VIOW) has announced it will be launching a brand new islandwide music-event-cum-visitor-experience next year.

“Acoustic Isle” will run from 13 to 23 March 2014 and will build on the Island’s musical heritage and encourage more out of season visitors in the 30+ age range.  During the 11-day event, there will be hundreds of performances given by Island musicians, who will come together under the Acoustic Isle banner with a series of intimate gigs in Island pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants.

Seen as a fantastic opportunity for Island businesses to benefit and increase sales at a traditionally quiet time of year, Acoustic Isle will also provide an efficient platform for local musicians to increase and maximise connection and interaction.

David Thornton, CEO Visit Isle of Wight, said:  “The Isle of Wight is a hotbed of musical talent and we believe that hosting a music event at this time of the year will give people considering an out of season break the extra encouragement they may need to choose us rather than Devon, Cornwall or Dorset”.

Another new event set up by VIOW in 2013, the Festival of the Sea will be moved to 19th to 23rd June to coincide with the annual J.P Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, organised by the Island Sailing Club and which takes place on 21st June 2014.

David Thornton said: “We are in discussion with the Island Sailing Club and the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race management team to consider opportunities to work together and explore ideas that will further enhance the overall competitor and visitor experience during the Race weekend”.

Visit Isle of Wight – the destination management organisation (DMO) working hard to establish the Isle of Wight as one of the UK’s leading holiday destinations – has also pledged its support to a range of festival and events in 2014.  These include the IW Walking Festival (3 to 18 May),  Newport Isle of Wight Jazz Festival  (18 to 20 July) Bestival (4 to 7 September), IW Cycling Festival (13 to 28th September) IW Literary Festival (date tbc) and Isle of Fright (18 October to 2nd November).

Any venue owner wishing to get involved and take advantage of this great marketing opportunity should register their interest at

More great acts confirmed for the Isle of Arts Festival 2013

The Isle of Arts Festival is a 3-day festival sponsored by Red Funnel and celebrates music, film, drama, art, photography, literature, comedy and much, much more.

Using different venues in Ventnor, there will be one or more featured headline events each day, supported by exhibitions and cultural events. The festival will also showcase local Isle of Wight talent and give Islanders of all ages and backgrounds the chance to join in workshops and art projects.

We are delighted to announce that Worbey & Farrell and their piano pyrotechnics, The Massive Violins & Stuart Maconie have all been added to a star studded line up that already features the comedian Alan Davies and The Skatonics, who are rapidly making a name for themselves as one of the best SKA bands in the UK.

Broadcaster and travel writer Stuart Maconie will be performing on Friday 19 April, the opening evening of the Isle of Arts Festival, in a show that tells some of the stories behind his twin passions – music and fell walking.

Also added to the line-up is Steven Worbey and Kevin Farrell who will astound you as they make the piano sound like you have never heard it before.  They have already entertained audiences all over the globe with their barnstorming blend of sparky comedy and utterly sensational piano playing. And now you can enjoy them at Isle of Arts on Saturday 20 April.

These internationally acclaimed concert pianists can imitate the tones of a Spanish guitar, make their piano resound with the pyrotechnics of Tchaikovsky’s 1812, or pulsate with the passions of the masters of jazz.

Elsewhere on the Saturday programme, The Massive Violins will deliver rock and pop classics in their own dynamic and innovative style.

From Abba to Elvis, Beach Boys to Britney Spears, with some unexpected numbers in between, this virtuoso band have been packing out London venues and garnering rave reviews about their thrilling live experience.
