VISIT ISLE OF WIGHT ANNOUNCES FRESH START WALKING WEEKEND THIS JANUARY

Visit Isle of Wight (VIOW) is delighted to announce the Fresh Start Walking Weekend, a two-day event, which the tourism organisation hopes will encourage visitors to kick-start their New Year’s resolutions to get active and healthy.

The new walking programme consists of 10 guided walks over the weekend of 7th and 8th January 2017.

Walks include Fortify Yourself (7th Jan/5miles), the Barnsley Trail (7th Jan/4miles), an attractive circular walk through open countryside and along the shoreline, skirting the areas of Seaview, Seagrove Bay and Nettlestone and North to South (8th Jan/18 miles), a walk-through Parkhurst Forest.

The Jail Trail (7th & 8th January/5.3 miles) is an exciting adventure through historic Newport to Carisbrooke to discover some of the island’s most famous prisoners – plus an opportunity to have a sneak peek into The Guildhall Cells.

January is a time of new beginnings and VIOW believes the combination of stunning coastal and countryside scenery coupled with a range of motivational winter hikes – and walking in the company of like-minded people with knowledgeable local leaders at the helm – will entice visitors to the Island this New Year.

The announcement to stage the Fresh Start Walking Weekend in January comes hot on the heels of the news that VIOW has revived the Island’s discontinued walking festival. IsleWalk17 will take place from 29th April to 14th May 2017.

Rod Stewart to headline The Isle of Wight Festival 2017 Sunday 11th June

 

Today the Isle of Wight Festival 2017 have announced Rod Stewart to headline on Sunday 11th June in his only UK festival appearance next year. He has been delighting fans at sold out concerts up and down the UK as part of his ‘From Gasoline Alley to Another Country Hits’ arena tour.

Rod Stewart will bring his spectacular live show to the festival for the first time, performing a set of both classics and new hits in his dazzling signature style. As one of the best-selling artists in the history of recorded music, with over 200 million records sold worldwide his performance will include show-stopping classics spanning five decades including ‘Maggie May, Da Ya Think I’m Sexy, Baby Jane, the First Cut is the Deepest and I Don’t Want to Talk About It’. Festival-goers will also be treated to tracks from his recently released critically acclaimed platinum album ‘Another Country’, which debuted at Number Two last year.

Rod Stewart said: ‘I have been very lucky to have played many of the world’s finest venues and festivals – but never played the legendary IOW Festival. I am so excited to put that right. June can’t come round soon enough.’

Isle of Wight Festival Promoter, John Giddings said: ‘I’ve wanted Rod Stewart to play at the festival for a number of years – he’s an incredible icon with a career that’s spanned over five decades so it’s impossible to not be a fan. Shanklin Chine is 200!

Autistic Holiday Centre to open on the Isle of Wight

Hartlands (previously Hartland Hotel) now owned by the SpectrumBreaks project has undergone a major refit.  Completing in October 2016, the centre provides families with autistic children holiday accommodation and facilities including Indoor Hydro Swimming Pool, Cinema, IT Room, Activity & Sensory Room, Coffee Lounge, Games Room, Art Room, Gymnasium and Sauna.  The Hartlands is a Victorian holiday centre situated in Shanklin on the south coast of the Isle of Wight.  The centre has been designed by its owners, with help from a leading specialist Dr Viv Hinchcliffe, to provide self-catering accommodation and facilities to support families with members of any age on the Autistic Spectrum.

The Isle of Wight Distillery launches new limited edition oak aged HMS Victory ‘navy strength’ gin

The Isle of Wight Distillery has recently launched the first of four batches of its limited edition oak aged HMS Victory ‘navy strength’ gin at a special event held on board the HMS Victory in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.  They also produce Wight Mermaids Gin, Rock Sea Vodka, Apple Pie Moonshine and coming soon, Isle of Wight Whisky.  Visitors can sample it at pubs and farm shops across the Island as well as from two or three mainland stockists and also online.   They are based in Ryde, where it’s possible to visit their vineyard home.  Admission is free and there is a café and shop on site too.

NEW TRAVEL AMBASSADOR GREEN STAR SCHEME TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT

A new scheme to raise awareness of sustainable transport options among the Island’s accommodation providers has been launched by Visit Isle of Wight in partnership with the Isle of Wight Council, thanks to a £40,000 grant from the council’s sustainable travel transition year programme which is funded by the Department for Transport.

The new Travel Ambassador Green Star Scheme was launched at an event at Shanklin Theatre this week (Tuesday 1 November) to an audience of around 200 accommodation providers.

The new scheme aims to provide accommodation providers with the tools they need to promote sustainable travel to their guests. Through the scheme one to one training sessions will be provided to up to 500 accommodation providers, plus resources including of hundreds of inspirational days out and activities, as well as information how to access the Island’s major towns from mainland train stations.

The scheme ensures accommodation providers are better placed to advise guests on how to enjoy the Island by foot, bicycle, public transport or the newly introduced car club.

Participating accommodation providers will be able to display a green star window sticker and logo which they can use in their own advertising and promotion.

Zoe Stroud from Visit Isle of Wight, said: “At Visit Isle of Wight we are committed to helping visitors see the Island in a greener way. We actively promote, under our Drive Less See More brand, cycling, walking, bus travel, train travel and other ways to see our beautiful island without a car. This scheme will ensure we all work together to ensure visitors love the Island as much as we do.”

Councillor Shirley Smart, Executive member for public transport, tourism, recreation and heritage at the Isle of Wight Council, said: “The Island’s accommodation providers are great ambassadors for our Island are well placed to advise visitors about the great range of things to see and do on the Isle of Wight. The Travel Ambassador Green Star Scheme will give the training and information they need to ensure their guests are able to get the most out of the Island by using sustainable transport, helping to make our Island even cleaner and greener.”

As with all of the council’s sustainable transport programme projects, the scheme is designed to support economic growth and reduce the Island’s carbon footprint, particularly by encouraging more people to participate in walking or cycling.

Dame Judi Dench returns to Osborne to star in a new film about Queen Victoria

Osborne on the Isle of Wight, the seaside residence of Queen Victoria, is a location for a major feature film due to be released in 2017 directed by Stephen Frears and starring Dame Judi Dench entitled “Victoria and Abdul.”

Set to be the first time Osborne’s interiors have been seen in a feature film, this former royal residence will appear in a significant portion of the movie, and is the only one of Queen Victoria’s homes to be used as a location.  It marks the return of Judi Dench to Osborne in the role of Queen Victoria having previously played the monarch in the film Mrs Brown, certain exterior scenes of which were filmed at Osborne.

According to the film’s producers, Victoria and Abdul charts the extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship in the later years of Queen Victoria’s remarkable rule.  When Abdul Karim (played by Indian actor Ali Fazal), a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favour with the Queen herself.  As the Queen questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance with a loyalty to one another that her household and inner circle all attempt to destroy.  The new film shows their friendship deepening and the Queen beginning to see a changing world through new eyes and joyfully reclaiming her humanity.

The influence of India on the Queen was nowhere more apparent than at Osborne, where a new ‘Indian’ wing was added to the main house..  The Indian inspired Durbar room with its elaborate ceiling designed by Lockwood Kipling is just one of the rooms set to appear on screen.  The opulent yellow drawing room with its luxurious upholstery and drapes and the stunning Grand Corridor will also feature.  The grand Italianate architecture of the house and its stunning grounds and views will be showcased.

Adam Richards Supervising Location Manager said, “It’s a tremendous thrill to film in the very rooms where the dramatic story of Queen Victoria and Abdul Karim played out in real life.”

English Heritage’s Rob Flower, General Manager at Osborne noted: “Osborne offers a unique insight into Victoria’s life – it was her family home and the only place she could really relax and be herself. The story of Victoria, Abdul and her Indian servants’ time at Osborne is a fascinating but little known one.  If you’re going to bring that story to life, where better place than where it actually happened?  We’re delighted to have welcomed Judi Dench, Stephen Frears, and the rest of the cast and crew  to Osborne and the Isle of Wight.  We’re looking forward to being part of a great British film.”

And the Chief Executive of Visit Isle of Wight, David Thornton, added that the filming of the movie of the Isle of Wight is likely to raise the profile of this popular holiday Island world-wide.

“Visiting film and TV locations has become a massive phenomenon in recent years, and we’ll be working very closely with Osborne, as well as VisitEngland and VisitBritain to make sure that everyone knows they can follow in the footsteps of some great historical figures, and movie stars here, on the Isle of Wight.”

The movie is expected to hit the screens on the 22nd  September, 2017.
